{April 20, 2008}   Bid To Limit Strip Clubs In Oregon Falls Flat

The latest attempt to curtail the strip club industry in Oregon has apparently run out of steam.

Backers of an initiative to give local governments the right to ban the clubs have stopped gathering signatures for the proposal. Salem correspondent Chris Lehman reports.

Right now local leaders have relatively little power to keep out X-rated businesses. Oregonians have voted several times to keep it that way.

State ACLU director David Fidanque says there are some liberties that should be off-limits for government.

David Fidanque: “There are some liberties that should be off-limits for government. Oregonians want to be able to decide for themselves what they read, see and hear, not to have government officials make those decisions
for them.”

The strip club initiative was the brainchild of Kevin Mannix. He’s a Republican who’s run for governor and has filed several initiatives. Mannix could not be reached for comment.
